Darrel Van Citters owns his own animation studio. His career began an artist at Disney feature animation. The story about how he left Disney, why he left and what happened after, which lead to him owning his own animation studio is a part of the conversation we have in this recording. Not only that but Darrel is also an author. He wrote a book on The Art of Jay Ward. The story about how that came about is something we also talk about. If you don’t know who Jay Ward is, he’s the producer of Rocky and Bulwinkle. We talk about the show’s production and art, which believe it or not, was animated in Mexico. Sit back and enjoy, this is a fun conversation. Showreel Flash Animation on Wakfu season 1 & 2 (Ankama) from FoyaLand on Vimeo.

One of the best artists in the business. He’s still drawing on paper too. He designed the Little Mermaid, and helped design Batman for the 90s animated series and Tiny Toons. You can see some of Dan's art by following the link below: This conversation goes deep. We don’t just go into his career but the philosophy behind being an artist in this industry. It’s a great conversation. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

The Corner Booth guys debate! Luis is a HUGE Superman nerd. He thinks Superman is better than Batman, and he talks about why. Superman animation has a history of defining and changing the character of Superman. Superman couldn't fly until he did so in the Fleischer shorts for instance. The Corner Booth guys get together to discuss, Superman, among many other things. Larry's love of another Fleischer character, Popeye, also gets thrown into the mix. That's when sparks start flying. Popeye vs. Superman? Join The Corner Booth guys as they enjoy a meal, a debate and a lot of fun banter. This is what it sounds like when animators simply have a conversation over dinner.

We sat down with famed Disney animator Dale Baer to discuss his career. Dale trained under renowned Disney Legend John Lounsbury, animating on classics such as Robin Hood, Winnie The Pooh, and The Rescuers. He went on to start his own studio, Baer Animation, which for many years was a very successful commercial studio. In this time period he kept connections with the Disney studio by working on Roger Rabbit, Prince and the Pauper, and the Lion King. When the market for commercials declined Dale Baer returned to Disney in 1998 where he has since supervised such characters as Yzma in Emperor’s New Groove, Slim in Home on the Range, Wilbur Robinson in Meet the Robinsons, Owl in the latest Winnie the Pooh movie, as well as once again animating Mickey Mouse in the short film Get A Horse. WE’VE ALL ASKED THIS QUESTION…How come my art/product/website isn’t making me money? No matter what line of work you are in, knowing how to market yourself is essential! It’s not just about what you’re selling – it’s about how you present and offer desired value to your market, audience, etc. That said, no one knows the importance of being able to create an independent economy for one’s self more then us ARTISTS!!! The problem is that most creative people just want to be creative. Hey, who doesn’t?…that’s the fun part! Short of a fluke or a miracle, however, simply putting your work online in front of random viewers just isn’t enough to generate a lucrative audience/result. There’s a lot more to it and we can ALL benefit from knowing how to market ourselves! Join us, your Corner Booth Animation pals, Luis Escobar, Chance Raspberry, and Larry Whitaker as we take one of hopefully several looks into the nuts and bolts of independent marketing. To receive email updates on The Corner Booth, join our newsletter. There you will also receive the inside scoop on where our next LIVE meet up will be so you can come join us, SUBSCRIBE.
